Serum Creatinine Blood Test

Creatinine

The serum creatinine value is used to assess renal function. Creatinine is produced at a fairly constant rate in the muscle. It undergoes complete glomerular filtration with little reabsorption by the renal tubules. Its clearance, is therefore, a good indicator of glomerular filtration. However, values do not being to increase until the GFR has fallen to below 50% or more. Furthermore, because of active tubular secretion the values of creatinine clearance is slightly higher than the true GFR. While this may not be of significance in normal individuals but it need consideration in patients in whom the GFR is less than 10ml/min.

Normal Values :

Adult Male     : 0.6 to 1.2 milligrams (mg) per deciliter (dL)
Adult Female : 0.5 to 1.1 milligrams (mg) per deciliter (dL)

Indications :

Chronic Kidney Diseases ( CKD )

Nurses Responsibility :

  • To measuring the creatinine values of a client the responsibility of nurse collect the 3ml of blood sample in a plain (Red) vaccutainer  from the peripheral veins and send to the bio chemistry lab for analyzing the creatinine values.
  • The actual process for measuring the creatinine level in biochemistry lab takesplace 40minutes.
